DEPARTMENT OF VERTEBRATE ZOOLOGY

Functions and tasks:

To investigate the fauna in various areas of Vietnam for evaluation of its economic and conservation significance.

To develop and implement the strategies for management, conservation and sustainable use of national biodiversity resources.

To study biology and ecology of rare and precious species for their management and conservation.

 

Activities:

The Department has coordinated or participated in implementation of many projects on biodiversity assessment and conservation in Vietnam; published a numbers of monographies and hundreds of scientific reports in Vietnamese and international journals. Bellow are some important projects that the Department has conducted:

·         1980-1985: Vietnam-Russian cooperative programme for baseline survey of wildlife in Vietnam tropical rainforests.

·         1981-1986: National research programme 52-01-02 for development of scientific background for rational utilization of zoological resources in tropical forest ecosystems of Vietnam.

·         1987-1990: National research programme 48C-01-02 for ecological study, conservation and restoration of highly endangered mammals (Asian elephant, Sika deer, Musk deer, etc.).

·         1990-1994: National research programme KT-02 for biodiversity assessment and conservation in of Vietnam.

·         1995-1997: Sectoral research programme for captive breeding of civets (Binturong, Owston’s palm civet, Large indian civet) and tigers.

·         1998-2000: Sectoral research programme for captive breeding of precious and endangered species (Musk deer, Owston’s palm civet, Black bear, Malaysian Bear).

·         2001 -2005: Sectoral research project for biodiversity re-assessment of protected areas and recommendation for improvement of Vietnam’s protected area system.

·         2006: Sectoral research project for ecological study and conservation of Sao la (Pseudoryx nghetinhensis) in Vietnam.

 

Cooperation:

Department of Vertebrate Zoology has collaboration with various overseas organizations/agencies in biodiversity investigation, research and conservation aspects.
