DEPARTMENT OF AQUATIC ECOLOGY

Functions and tasks:

To conduct studies on typical aquatic ecosystems within Vietnam including the species composition, community structure, quantitative distribution, nutrient relations, assessment and prediction of ecological succession of inland waterbodies under the influences of natural and anthropogenic factors.

To study the hydrobiological fauna of fresh, brackish and sea waters (taxonomy, geographical distribution, biological characteristics, and biodiversity conservation).

To investigate the experimental ecotoxicology which forms the scientific bases of using bio-indices for the rapid assessment and biological monitoring of water quality.

Activities:

The National Programs for the study of coastal ecosystems and biological resources for planning and the rational use of natural resources in the coastal zone of the northern Vietnam (1976-1980; 1981-1985; 1986-1990 and 1991-1996.

The National Programs and Projects for fundamental research on hydrobiological fauna and wetland ecosystems in the Mekong delta (1982-1985 and 2003-2004).
