DEPARTMENT OF MOLECULAR SYSTEMATICS AND CONSERVATION GENETICS

Functions and tasks:
To study the genetic diversity in plants and animals using molecular markers such as isozymes, SSR, RAPD, AFLP, RFLP etc to contribute to the successful management and conservation of rare and precious species.

To determine species and phylogeny in taxonomy and evolution based on DNA data with implications for its taxonomy and conservation.

Activities:

Gene conservation and management of forest habitats for wild flora (six cycads Cycas dolichpohylla, C. balansae, C. hoabinhensis, C. ferruginea, C. simplicipinna, C. chevalieri and two bamboo species Bambusa bambos and B. nutans in northern Vietnam).

Gene conservation and management of threatened species within populations by isozyme techniques in relation to human activities, particularly deforestation and over-exploitation of forest resources.

Cooperation:

International Plant Genetic Resources Institute (IPGRI), ASEAN regional Centre for Biodiversity Conservation (ARCBC), Free University of Brussel, Ghent University.
