DEPARTMENT OF PLANT RESOURCES

DEPARTMENT OF PLANT RESOURCES

Functions and tasks:

To survey, research and assess the status of the plant resources in Vietnam.

To study the distribution, biological characteristics, intraspecific bio-diversity, population and production of some plants possessing high socio-economic and scientific value. To study the aspects on the formation, transformation and accumulation of useful compounds in plants.

To study the scientific and technological bases for the cultivation, production and introduction of some new plants having high socio-economic value and their adaptation to different ecological areas.

To recommend methods for conservation of precious species.

Activities:

Survey, investigate and evaluate the possible occurrence of plant resources in Vietnam.

Study the scientific bases for the protection, exploitation, development and utilization of plants of high economic value: aromatic plants (Mentha arvensis, M. piperita, Ocimum basilicum, O. gratissimum, Cymbopogon winterianus, C. martinii, Vetiveria zizanioides, Pogostemon cablin, Fokienia hodginsii, Litsea cubeba, Elsholtzia spp., ect.); oleiferous plants (Vernicia montana, V. fordii, Camellia oleifera, Cleidiocarpon cavaleriei, C. laurinum); medicinal plants (Stephania spp. Celastrus spp., Holarhena pubescens, etc).

Participate in the assessment on the environmental impacts of the hydroelectric plants in the country.

Investigate the biodiversity and the plant resources in some National Parks and Nature Reserves in the country.

The scientists of the Department have published over 200 scientific reports in reviews and proceedings of both national and international journals and some monographs such as: Essential oil Plants in Vietnam and Plant Resources of Vietnam.
